I believe that housing is a basic human need, and that our state needs more resources to give everyone a warm, safe place to call home. Families in my community are struggling to make ends meet. Meanwhile, many wealthy property owners and developers have blocked our efforts to build more homes that working people can afford. Because there is no permanent funding source, we have to fight every year for money for affordable housing. If you pass the Affordable Housing Act (HB 2276/SB 6191), we would create sustainable funding for affordable homes for all, including our farm workers, people with disabilities who need supportive housing, and families living paycheck to paycheck. Because this funding would come from a small 1% tax on property sales over $3.025 million, this bill would also help right our unjust tax code. We would be able to fund the housing we need, while ordinary people who sell our properties would actually see our tax rate stay the same or be reduced.
